‘The Gin Behind The Couch’ is a tribute to my childhood mentor, beloved piano teacher Mable Brandon, who began teaching me at age five and remained a guiding force during my childhood. It is a musical love story to her. Being an adoptee, raised in a small village in rural Manitoba, I experienced isolation and struggled to find ‘belonging’. By some ‘miracle’ there was an accomplished piano teacher there and when I was 5, my parents offered me piano lessons with her. Being mentored by my piano teacher ‘saved me’, gave me the emotional connection and belonging I so needed, influencing and inspiring my entire musical career as a music educator and performer. ‘The Gin Behind The Couch’ describes the developing relationship between Mable and me, from piano teacher to friend.

During my 45 years as a music teacher, I’ve always felt I’ve been ‘carrying Mable’s torch’, sharing her inspiration with my own piano, voice and choral students in Manitoba, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia. 

I wanted to find a way to honor her, so 10 years ago I started to write a play about Mable and had a dream to complete and perform it by the time I was 70. Last year, age 70, I performed the play at St Luke’s United Church in Upper Tantallon, NS, the location of my current music teaching studio.

‘The Gin Behind The Couch’ interweaves stories of Mable and our shared experiences with my classical piano performances. My play, one hour in length, is half story telling, and half a virtual musical concert, my personal “OPUS’, a ‘musical testimonial’ of the value of Mable’s mentorship in my life. My wish is that the greater community will be inspired by my play and continue supporting mentorship programs.
