Tim Eriksen may be impossible.He’s a Grammy-nominated musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist, Sacred Harp authority, former punk frontman and one of the most celebrated traditional singers in America—and now he’s coming to the tiny listening room at White Lilac.BBC Radio 2 called Eriksen “the best ballad singer of his generation.”T Bone Burnett called him “one of the best singers in music.”Barbara Kingsolver described his voice simply as “otherworldly.”And that voice has traveled some remarkable places.Eriksen made extensive contributions to the Academy Award-winning film Cold Mountain, serving as a musical consultant and performer and helping bring the raw power of authentic Sacred Harp singing to the film. He taught the tradition to cast members, gathered traditional singers for the soundtrack and helped shape one of the movie’s most unforgettable musical elements.His songs have been performed by Alison Krauss, Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Joan Baez—with Baez choosing Eriksen’s haunting “I Wish the Wars Were All Over” as the final song she recorded.He is also the recipient of the Jean Ritchie Musical Heritage Award, personally presented by Ritchie herself, and one of the leading figures in the international revival of Sacred Harp and shape-note singing. His compositions are sung at gatherings around the world.Before all of that, Eriksen helped found the influential folk-punk band Cordelia’s Dad, blending centuries-old American songs with the intensity of punk. His career has put him on stages with everyone from Kurt Cobain to Doc Watson—a distinction that tells you just how far his musical world stretches.He has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Academy Awards, collaborated across traditions ranging from hardcore punk and Bosnian folk to South Indian classical music and symphonic composition, and earned a PhD in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University.
