𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐒 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐲?
It’s the process of taking a page—from a book, magazine, or newspaper—and forming a poem using only the words already on that page—“blacking out” the remaining words in a myriad of ways (ink, markers, paint, and more).
You don’t have to be a poet or an artist to try it. The words are already there for you—your only job is to choose the ones that speak to you.
I discovered blackout poetry about 10 years ago, and it has fueled my creativity in so many ways ever since. I’ve wanted to share this art form with others for a very long time—but fear held me back.
So I thought, “Let’s just get a date on the calendar.” (Because I knew that would finally motivate me to follow through.)
I’m so excited to share an art form I love deeply—along with creative tips, encouragement, and guidance as you play with blackout poetry in your own way.
The BLACKOUT POETRY WORKSHOP is happening!!
✨ 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝.
Everyone will go home with a thrifted book, a notebook, a pen, and a few extra goodies.
I’ll have markers, Sharpies, and pencils available to use during the workshop. This workshop will focus on the foundation of blackout poetry.
My hope is to inspire you to try something new—an expressive, low-pressure creative practice you can return to whenever you need to release some creative energy. And if you’re already a seasoned blackout poet, come hang out and soak in the fun, creative vibes.
At the end of the workshop, there will be an optional opportunity to share poems aloud with the group—for anyone who wishes.
