Using the Health and Safety Executive’s key publication, “Striking the Balance Between Operational and Health and Safety Duties in the Police Service,” we will examine how policing organisations can make proportionate, defensible decisions, particularly in situations where risk is dynamic and high‑stakes.Through real‑world perspectives, discussion, and practical examples, we’ll explore:The real challenges frontline policing teams face when balancing competing dutiesWhat “striking the balance” means in practice for supervisors, commanders, and support teamsHow to apply the HSE guidance to improve organisational decision‑makingThe importance of clear risk ownership, leadership accountability, and effective communicationHow health and safety professionals can better support operational policing without creating unnecessary barriersThis is an in‑person event.
