A celebration of culture, endurance and unity set against the backdrop of the breathtaking beauty of the 135-kilometer Lake Okanagan. Featuring the world’s longest inland canoe race.
This lake, steeped in legend and natural wonder, provides the perfect stage for this unprecedented event. "Participants will embark on an epic journey, paddling through calm and turbulent waters, stunning landscapes, and majestic, mesmerizing beauty of the mountainous valleys of Lake Okanagan. This race is a true test of endurance and skill, celebrating both our natural surroundings and the spirit of Indigenous camaraderie.
"The regatta is open to Indigenous non-indigenous paddlers of all skill levels and ages, from seasoned paddlers to newcomers discovering the power of the canoe. This event fosters community, honouring each participant’s contribution to our shared journey. "The race itself will be a sight to behold—canoes gliding through turquoise waters, mountains rising on either side, and the ever-present spirit of Indigenous traditions guiding each stroke."
We should all recognize that wisdom isn’t found by piling up knowledge, it is the finding of hidden patterns of meaning and beauty that can renew individuals and reunite the community. It may be that the survival of humanity depends on the acknowledgement of our tribal origins!
"In the evenings, we come together to share stories, music, comedy, fashions, and traditional foods, enriching our connection and promoting truth and reconciliation. These gatherings strengthen our bonds, allowing us to reflect on the race and our shared heritage. "A celebration of the cultural heritage of indigenous cultures from around the world.
"This regatta is also about the future. Young paddlers and children experience our rich cultural teachings, ensuring that these traditions continue for generations to come. We aim to inspire the next generation to honour and celebrate our heritage."
"At the end of the regatta, we all come together for the awards ceremony, a goodbye celebration for all those who participated. An evening of entertainment first nations Inuit and Metis culinary delights. But the true prize is the unity we forge, the connections we build, and the respect we share for each other and the land." "Join us at the Kelowna International Indigenous Canoe Regatta, where tradition meets endurance, and where we paddle together on the world’s longest inland race.
This isn’t just a race it’s a gathering of indigenous cultures from around the world showcasing Indigenous cuisine, tattoos, visual, performing, arts, spoken word, storytelling, traditional medicines and much more. Here we honour the traditions of our ancestors coming together to share our heritage through the art of canoeing, a symbol of strength, resilience, and our connection to land and water. "Kelowna is the pacific Northwest is allegedly home to legendary Sasquatch aka big foot, and the world-famous home of Ogopogo a Sea serpent where legend says lives hidden below rattle snake island.
In closing of the world first regatta! A quote from Tribal Wisdom for the modern world states! "Change-makers stand at the edge of one world, where the old ways begin to fade, and the future is yet unformed. With courage and creativity, they shape the next world from whatever is at hand—ideas, traditions, and dreams. They are the architects of tomorrow, weaving the threads of the past and present into a new, vibrant tapestry that honours where we’ve been and boldly embraces where we are going." Together, we honour our past, embrace our present, and paddle toward a stronger, united future."
When the regatta closes time will fade away, nature will gently reclaim her own, and every footprint upon the shore will melt softly back into the lake’s embrace. All that will remain are the stirring echoes of our shared journey, weaving through the trees like whispered songs of all our relations. The first international Indigenous regatta will rest patiently, a legacy held in the earth and sky, awaiting the return of every soul—Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike. Together, they come with open hearts and fervor, celebrating and honoring this gathering that transcends heritage and unites us all. Here, the joyful spirit of connection and shared humanity flows as freely as the lake’s gentle waves, carrying the hope of a more harmonious world for countless generations yet to come.
David Malo an Indigenous Hawaiian Historian is quoted as saying: The mind is like a tree that should have its roots deep in the ground if it is to stand firm and unshaken. The greater our understanding of past and distant cultures the deeper our roots and stronger our trees will grow.
