TENJIN IKEDA

Tenjin Ikeda, is an Afro-Puerto Rican artist born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan first focusing on graphic design and ultimately Fine Arts where he felt more freedom to express myself. It was at the Art Students League in New York City that I discovered printmaking, which has been my focus for the past 26 years working mainly in linoleum cuts. It is my desire to continue to visibly show the richness of my ancestry to the world. There are elements of storytelling within the images I create, from sacred myth and oral traditions that I was raised with in order to form a narrative of an ancestral foundation, memory as well as a guide to healing and self-actualization. He has various works in private collections as well as acquisitions by The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Print Club of Albany, and the Art Student’s League. His work has been featured as cover art and illustrations for various books and has been included in There Hand Magazine a quarterly publication showcasing various photographic and print processes. He has been included in “Modern Printmaking,” a book of 30 contemporary printmakers by Sylvie Covey as well as Botanical Block Printing by Rosanna Morris.
