Bandhan is loosely based on Lorca’s Blood Wedding. Blood Wedding was written in 1932 and first performed in Madrid in March 1933. Lorca was inspired by a sensational crime that he read about in the Madrid daily ABC in 1928. In the farming village of Níjar, a young man had been murdered after attempting to run away with a bride on the eve of her wedding. It was later revealed that the murderer had been the groom's cousin.
The protagonists of Blood Wedding are ordinary women confronting their own passionate natures and rebelling against the constraints of Spanish society. The unnamed bride in Blood Wedding runs away from her wedding reception with her former suitor, Leonardo, who is married. The mother who has already lost her husband and her elder son fears the worst for her younger and only living son. The men K*ll each other, leaving the bereaved women—Leonardo’s wife, the bridegroom’s mother, and the bride—to bewail their losses. In many ways the play reflects the many news stories of honour killings we read in our present day.
