While early influences came from Chinese culture and later Western confectioneries, the Japanese people transformed these inspirations through a unique artistic lens. By incorporating creativity, delicate aesthetics, and a deep sensitivity to the changing seasons, they cultivated the distinct craft known today as wagashi.In this hands-on workshop, you will explore the art of wagashi-making under the guidance of Ayako Mizumura, proprietor of Lawrence-based Bimi Bakery. During the session, you will learn a brief history of wagashi and create two varieties of nerikiri wagashi—a beautiful mixture of sweetened white bean paste and glutinous rice flour traditionally served at tea ceremonies.To conclude the afternoon, you will enjoy a tasting of matcha green tea andseasonal Sakuramochi (cherry blossom mochi) handmade by Ayako.This program was inspired by Miss Shizuoka, our Japanese Friendship Doll, which was on view in The Charles & Anna Milbank Library. The special display was further inspired by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s fall 2025 production of Madame Butterfly, celebrating Japanese-American relations—past, present, and future.Please Note: All ingredients used in this workshop are vegan and gluten-free.
