FREE admission — and specia...About this EventArnold Young is a Kansas City drummer, composer, educator, and artist with a career that spans free jazz, avant-garde composition, and the deep KC tradition. The first drummer to play free jazz in Kansas City, he has performed with icons including Sonny Simmons, Jaco Pastorius, Eddie Harris, Mike Dillon, and members of the Rova Sax Quartet and Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. He studied at the UMKC Conservatory and West African Percussion at UC Berkeley.In 2014, Arnold formed *The Roughtet* to explore new directions in composed and improvised music. The group is a Kansas City-based avant-garde jazz quintet known for unique original music best described as "rough jazz" — ambitious, searching, and distinctly their own. Their 2022 CD was celebrated locally, and the band's appearances are always events for anyone following KC's experimental edge.For this Monday Night Jam, Arnold and The Roughtet are joined by special guest *Roger Wilder* on piano — a longtime UMKC jazz faculty member, KC jazz institution, and pianist whose credits include Stanley Turrentine, Randy Brecker, and Chris Potter. (Despite what the image shows, Thelonious Monk not included. But Roger is almost that good!)Expect a 45-minute set of original music, followed by the Blue Room's open jam.
