- **Event Description**: The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is inviting you to the second round of community meetings to help shape the future of Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden! The City’s most popular botanical garden is continuing its journey towards developing its first master plan, with a workshop scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 2026 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Hale ʻĀkoakoa at Windward Community College.

Staff at this beloved botanical garden believe the best ideas come from the community, with your voices guiding this journey towards long-range planning as it nears its halfway point. Ultimately, the master plan aims to improve the visitor experience, accessibility, stewardship of cultural and natural resources, and future garden facilities.

“Our first master plan public meeting in November 2025 yielded some amazing feedback,” said Joshlyn Sand, Director of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. “We are very much looking forward to hearing more from the community we serve, especially with the recent improvements to the garden’s main road and the implementation of the one-day-a-week closure every Thursday.”

A dedicated website about this effort will continue to provide updates and future meeting details. That information is available at: honolulu.gov/dpr/hoomaluhia-long-range-planning/

Since opening in 1982, the 400-acre Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden has become an essential part of the Windward Oʻahu community. With nearly 724,000 visitors in Fiscal Year 2025 (July 2024 – June 2025), the garden continues to thrive as a cherished wahi pana (storied place) for relaxation, education, and recreation. As a result of this record-breaking attendance, a one-day-a-week closure every Thursday began in 2026 to help preserve this natural treasure. January 2026 also saw the completion of an extensive road repaving effort, which revitalized the garden’s main vehicular and pedestrian thoroughfare.
