From Berlin to Sri Lanka: CMSC Announces Midsummer Vocal Concerts in Colombo and Jaffna
COLOMBO - This July, the Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC) will present a major midsummer concert and masterclass series featuring two rising soloists from the European opera circuit: Sri Lankan tenor Thaisen Rusch and German-Estonian mezzo-soprano Ireene Ollino.

Both artists arrive fresh from the chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Rusch, who recently recorded Schubert’s Winterreise and serves as artist-in-residence with the Sinfonisches Kammerorchester Berlin, has previously performed with the Munich Philharmonic and the Berlin Radio Choir. Ollino, a laureate of the Triomphe de l’Art competition, has sung under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle and Thomas Guggeis at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

For these performances, principal players of the CMSC, led by Artistic Director Lakshman Joseph-de Saram and joined by pianist Johann Peiris, will back the vocalists in a demanding program that sidesteps conventional curation. Rather than stick to a singular era, the repertoire moves from the structured Baroque architecture of Handel and the late-Romantic intimacy of Mahler’s “Urlicht,” to the dramatic theatricality of Bizet, Mozart, and Verdi.

“This concert hopes to strip these pieces back to their bones so the music and the singer can speak plainly,” Joseph‑de Saram said. “In an intimate setting, you hear every breath and every shift in color. Ireene and Thaisen bring a rare depth and honesty to the stage; they don’t just sing the notes, they tell the story. We want listeners to encounter these works anew - not as two-dimensional museum pieces, but as living, breathing music.”

Founded in 2007 by Joseph-de Saram, the CMSC has spent nearly twenty years focusing on serious, high-concept programming, balancing its artistic standards with community outreach. While the society answers to an international advisory board that includes virtuoso violinist Midori and Leslie Suganandarajah (Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater), its Education Fund actively works to make classical music accessible, distributing thousands of free tickets to students from marginalized backgrounds for masterclasses and live concerts.

Performance & Ticket Information
The series opens in Colombo at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on Thursday, July 25 at 7:00 PM, supported by the Rukmini Tissanayagam Trust, A. Baur & Co., and the Goethe-Institut.
The ensemble will then travel north for a historic performance in Jaffna at Kälam on Sunday, July 28 at 6:30 PM. The Jaffna concert is funded through the generosity of the Samuel Gnanam IT Center, with the Goethe-Institut continuing as venue partner.
