Please come to the bookstore on this evening for a free and open "talk back" conversation meant to empower gender inclusivity in private and public caretaking spheres. This event is inspired by HRC's "National Day of Reading", which launched in 2015 in response to an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group forcing a school in Wisconsin to cancel plans to read "I am Jazz" in support of a transgender student, and a community that took this book--and their right to read and affirm this student--into their own hands.
Since this time, HRC has invited communities nationwide to host public conversations and readings that continue to affirm and uphold gender, racial, ethnic, and social identities, in active resistance to ongoing forces of hate. This conversation is open to all community members and is meant as a dialogue with prompts that will include:
--recommendations of new, vibrant, and beautiful books to consider in inclusive settings and/or as read-togethers
--perspective, advice, and inspiration from writers and creators on the importance and value of queer representation in story
--tips for educators on answering curiosity and building supportive classrooms; and
--an opportunity for conversation in a welcoming and supportive space
