PERMISSION TO DEFEND AGAINST OPPRESSION
Allah says:
“Permission (to fight) has been granted to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged. And indeed, Allah is fully capable of giving them victory.”
(Qur’an 22:39)
“Those who were driven out of their homes without any right, only because they said: ‘Our Lord is Allah.’ And if Allah did not repel some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, where the name of Allah is mentioned much, would have been demolished. And Allah will surely support those who support His cause. Indeed, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty.”
(Qur’an 22:40)
EXPLANATION:
These verses from Surah Al-Hajj contain the first permission given to Muslims to defend themselves in battle. For many years, the early Muslims in Makkah were persecuted, tortured, and expelled from their homes simply because they believed in Allah.
Allah granted them permission to fight not for aggression, but to resist oppression and injustice. The purpose of this defense is to protect faith, justice, and places of worship, whether they belong to Muslims or others.
The verses also remind believers that true victory comes from Allah, and He promises to support those who stand for truth and defend righteousness.
THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR: Islam does not permit injustice, but it allows standing firmly against oppression while upholding justice and the protection of religious freedom.
