? Why Attend?

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is an evidence-based training that teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in adolescents ages 12–18.

Mental health concerns affect young people in every community and classroom. This course provides practical tools to help you confidently assist youth who may be experiencing a crisis or developing a mental health problem—whether you’re a parent, teacher, healthcare worker, or community member.

Participants leave the course with real-world strategies to listen, reassure, and connect young people to appropriate professional or community resources.

? Training Format: In-Person Workshop

This 8-hour, interactive session combines instruction, discussion, and hands-on activities to help participants build practical skills and confidence.

What the training includes:

Instructor-led learning: Guided activities, role-play scenarios, and case studies.

Practical tools: Apply the YMHFA Action Plan to real-life examples.

Supportive environment: Engage with peers and community members who share your commitment to youth well-being.

Through this course, participants will:

Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges in youth

Respond effectively and empathetically during a mental health crisis

Apply the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to assess, assist, and connect young people to professional help

Understand how to support youth without overstepping personal or professional boundaries

Access and utilize school, community, and national resources for youth mental health support

The Alaska Nurses Association is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Montana Nurses Association, an accredited approver with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

(CEUs may also be applicable for other professional boards; please verify with your licensing body.)
