On the festival of the Baptism of Our Lord, Jesus comes to the waters of the Jordan to be baptized by John, the heavens are opened, the Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice from heaven proclaims, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” In this great epiphany Jesus is revealed as God’s chosen servant who will bring forth justice and be a light to the nations, and in the waters of baptism we too are washed, anointed by the Spirit, and named God’s beloved children. We gather to remember our own baptisms and to be sent again to share good news with all who are oppressed or in need of God’s healing.
