The third and final leg of the SA Triple Crown and Triple Tiara for 3-year old’s takes place on the 4th of April on Derby Day at Turffontein Racecourse. Apart from the 2450m Grade 1 SA Derby being worth R1.5 million itself, there is an additional R2 million bonus should the same horse win all three legs of the Triple Crown. This amazing feat has only been accomplished three times in Triple Crown history – by Horse Chestnut (1999), Louis the King (2014) and Abashiri (2016) – and twice by the fillies in the Triple Tiara by Igugu (2011) and Cherry on the Top (2013).
Derby Day also plays host to the Joburg Prawn Festival with a variety of delicious prawn dishes being served up on-course. So whether your passion lies with the incredible equine athletes lining up in the starting stalls or for the gastronomic delights on sale, be sure to make your way to Turffontein Racecourse on 4 April to grab your piece of the action. Gates open at 11h00 and entrance on to the racecourse is free.
