On 6 March 2026 at 18:30, Lit.Culture and Breezeblock Cafe present Dawjee Trio live at 29 Chiswick Street, Brixton. Saxophonist and convenor Muhammad Dawjee is joined by Nhlanhla Radebe on upright bass and Simphiwe Shiburi on drums.
This is music for close listening. Breath, resonance and rhythm unfold in real time.
A leading voice in South Africa’s contemporary jazz landscape, Dawjee has performed with The Brother Moves On, Kinsmen and iPhupho L’ka Biko, and collaborated with Bra Herbie Tsoaeli, Andile Yenana and Tumi Mogorosi. In trio form, his sound is concentrated and immediate: three musicians in dialogue, each line fully present.
His work traces ancestry and generational displacement, shaped by early encounters with melodic recitation in his grandfather’s living room. Projects such as Otherness explore the meeting points between Ghoema and swing, where tradition and improvisation intersect.
Motifs evolve. Grooves shift. Silence carries intention.
