Abstract: Amorites were said to be among Canaan’s inhabitants at the time of its conquest by Israel. Yet, they are far better known for their rulers during the first half of the second millennium BCE or the Middle Bronze Age. Then, Amorite rulers like Hammurabi of Babylon ruled states across the Near East, from Bahrain to the Egyptian Delta. Competition, emulation, and their pursuit of legitimation inspired their patronage of long-distance trade, temple construction and religious orders, the arts, warfare and fortification building. This lecture explores the construction of this legacy, why it spread, and why Amorite identity was commemorated so widely in later Near Eastern history.

Bio: Aaron Burke is Prof. of the Archaeology of the Levant and Ancient Israel and the Kershaw Chair of the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Studies in the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Dept. at UCLA. He is author of The Amorites and the Bronze Age Near East (CUP, 2021), and founding editor of Elements in the Archaeology of Ancient Israel published by Cambridge University Press.
