Abstract: With the 20th-century Aliyah of the Betä Ǝsraʾel to Israel, almost all of their religious sites in Ethiopia were abandoned and remain undocumented. In this talk, I will examine the characteristics of Betä Ǝsraʾel religious sites in the context of religious architecture of the Ethiopian Highlands, based in part on archaeological fieldwork in which we examined the remains of Betä Ǝsraʾel religious sites in detail for the first time. I will demonstrate how the Betä Ǝsraʾel employed common architectural themes, shaping them to express their unique identity and religious observances, and how religious sites served to commemorate seminal events in Betä Ǝsraʾel history and dynamics with others.

Bio: Bar Kribus specializes in Ethiopian archaeology and history. He was a member of the ERC project JewsEast and a post-doc of the Minerva Stiftung at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and later a post-doc of the Dan David Society of Fellows and a researcher of the Diaspora Research Center at Tel Aviv University. Bar is the director of the Research Institute of the Ethiopian Jewry Heritage Center.
