A Night of Celebration Yamma Teiman and Special Guest, Tzion Golan

The Yamma Teiman Ensemble brings to the stage songs of Yemenite women that were mostly a refuge for expressing feelings which were transferred from mothers to daughters within the family and community.

The singing of Yemenite women was mostly secular based on Yemenite Arabic and not considered worthy of listening to. Strong Yemenite women who never had the privilege of learning to read and write but proudly bore the burden of raising children doing the housework and caring for the family poured into this secular song their pain joy sorrow problems despair frustration love passion dreams hopes and many other feelings besides.

They sang on regular and festive days. Song served them as a method of emotional expression as they spent long hours grinding grain while other members of the family were asleep.

Their songs that were never preserved or written down but were passed from generation to generation of women nevertheless serve as a living testimony the only one that survives that enables us to delve deeply into the Yemenite household of old into family relations and into the souls of young women and even little girls who were forced to marry at an early age against their will.

Tzion Golan is the most prominent Yemenite singer in Israel today and has been an active performer for 40 years. To date he has released 34 albums and two books of songs “Zmirot Tzion”. He was recently granted an award for his contribution to preserving the musical traditions of Yemen at an academic conference entitled “Innovations in Researching Yemenite Jewry” held at Ashkelon Academic College.
