From our earliest stirrings of political consciousness, people have dreamt of building an ideal state. 

Our text tradition preserves the record of such an attempt, a glorious commonwealth that existed for a brief moment of time about three thousand years ago. 

We will consider the rise and fall of this ideal state through the life and times of its main protagonist, King Solomon, focusing our attention upon the beginning of the Book of Kings 1, Chapters 1–12.
