What is the Peace Light?
The Peace Light is actually a flame gathered each year from lanterns kept burning in the grotto in Bethlehem at the Church of the Nativity where Jesus was born. The Peace Light is flown to Vienna, Austria and then to New York City from where it is distributed to delegations who take it, with a message of Peace, and pass it along to others. In this process, the Peace Light spreads throughout Europe and North America to houses of worship, hospitals, homeless shelters, retirement homes, prisons, and places of public, cultural, and political importance - to anybody who appreciates the significance of the "gift.”
Who is Invited to Participate?
The Peace Light ceremony in Jersey Village is a Messenger of Peace initiative of Scouting America. The ceremony is open to anyone without regard to religious affiliation or membership in any Scouting organization. We expressly invite the Jersey Village and surrounding community to join us for this unique event. There is no fee to attend.
What Will Happen at the Peace Light Ceremony?
A volunteer with Scouting America will preside over the ceremony and provide the historical background and significance of the Peace Light. The flame will be presented to the audience and anyone who wishes to take home the Peace Light should bring a long-burning candle or lantern and a safe method for transporting the flame. We encourage everyone to pass along the Peace Light and its message at your home, houses of worship, among your friends, and throughout the community.
