It will strain homeowners who are dealing with higher school 17% and county 14% taxes. Some renters may feel it through higher rents. Seniors on fixed incomes, working families and small businesses will be forced to absorb the consequences.

Throughout the process, the public was led to believe that the increase might be brought lower as the budget was scrutinized. However, the State most recently reiterated that with the loan agreement, an increase below 15% would not be possible.

Residents deserved to know that from the beginning.

This cannot become the new normal. Jersey City needs transparency, responsible spending, long term planning and a clear strategy.

The budget with a 15.5% increase may be close to adoption, but the public’s role is not over.
