Welcome to the FREE Contemporary Dance Class taught by Mamiko Usuda!
Join us at Jersey City Ballroom at 189 Brunswick St 3rd Jersey City for a contemporary dance class in a warm and welcoming space. This in-person class to all levels.
This class is presented as part of Intertwine Festival and is made possible with support from the Jersey City Arts & Cultural Trust Fund. Join us in celebrating movement, community, and creative access for all!
Biography:
Mamiko Usuda was born and raised in Ibaraki, Japan where she began dancing at an early age, traning at Takeo Hirata Modern Dance Academy under the direction of Yuka Hirata. She attended Point Park University, where she received a B.F.A with a Major in Dance.
While attending university, she worked with Metamorphosis Dance as a soloist under the direction of Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich during the summer of 2015 and 2016, in Mexico, Spain, and Italy.
In 2017, after she graduated university, she received training under Emanuel Gat, Sita Ostheimer, and Spenser Theberge at Nuova Officina della Danza in Italy.
In 2018, she continued her career in Japan and performed at the Tokyo 2020 Palarympic opening ceremony, choreographed by Kaiji Moriyama. In 2023, she toured nationally across Japan, again with Mr. Moriyama, to perform the piece “The Little Prince”.
In 2024, she will perform for Moving Forward Collective, Michiyaya Dance, Wild Dream, morgaine de leonardis works through the year.
Throughout her career, she’s also worked with Jiri Pokorny, Kenta Kojiri, Hiroaki Umeda, Karl Alfred Schreiner, Paul Julius, and Sjinji Nakamura. Mamiko continues to share her artistry as a freelance contemporary dancer.
As a choreographer, her first individual work was awarded third place at the National Dance Competition of Japan in 2019, where I both choreographed and performed a solo piece.
Upon relocating my career to the United States in 2023, she was invited to choreograph a piece for three professors at Point Park University, contributing to the Inside Outside project at Pittsburgh Playhouse.
Subsequently, in August 2023, she made Jersey City her new home after moving from Pittsburgh. She has received Dance New Jersey Regrant Program in 2023. She has been setting her new piece in Atlanta, Georgia for world premier on March and presented her another new works at Smush Gallery and Art House Production, Jersey City on April and November.
Mamiko Usuda is dedicated to sharing my artistry as a freelance contemporary dancer and choreographer, both nationally and internationally.
