Learn how to adjust and optimize DSLR camera settings, select a shooting location, and, of course, shoot spectacular images of the night sky.Particpants should bring:A camera that has manual mode and at least up to ISO 6400.You can use multiple lenses, but we recommend your widest-angle lens (Between 8mm-50mm and f-stop lower than 3.2).A sturdy tripod.Extra memory cards and batteriesThumb driveRemote shutter controlA headlamp or flashlight with red right.Drinking water and snacks.Sturdy footwear and warm clothing.We ask that program participants arrive with a basic understanding of how to operate their camera in the dark. If you're not experienced with shooting at night, your camera's instruction manual may come in handy. If you do not have a camera with Manual mode or cannot borrow one, we can work with the camera you have. You may not get the greatest images, but our main goal is for you to learn how to shoot at night and have fun!Evening temperatures at Valles Caldera in the summertime can hover between 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Please plan to dress accordingly.Valles Caldera is a U.S. Fee location, so plan to purchase a day pass or an Inter-Agency pass, or have your own available.Instructor BiographyDon Riddle is a retired Marine officer and former business owner with a passion for landscape and night photography. With a wealth of experience in both military service and entrepreneurship, Don has seamlessly transitioned into a fulfilling retirement, dedicating the last six years to sharing his expertise with others. Known for his love of the great outdoors, Don has become a valued volunteer for the National Park Service, specializing in Milky Way photography. His primary teaching ground has been the enchanting Great Basin National Park, where he imparts his knowledge to eager learners. Over time, he has expanded his teaching to other breathtaking locations like Bryce Canyon National Park Cedar Breaks National Monument, Capital Reef National, Park Devils Tower, and other National Parks and Monuments. One distinctive aspect of Don's mission is his annual motorcycle journey out west.
