About the program: 
Presented by Michelle Brooks

An unexpected lightning strike resulted in a new Capitol building and an unexpected war delayed its dedication. In 1924, six years after the current Capitol opened, it was dedicated in one of the grandest single-day events in Jefferson City’s history. This program will explore the elaborate preparations that went into this large-scale event planned in a short amount of time. 25,000 visitors required parking for 10,000 vehicles. Special trains were scheduled, private homes hosted strangers, and local churches and clubs served low-cost meals. Meet the men and women behind the scenes and enjoy photos of a romantic moment in the Capital City’s lifetime.


The Thursday Evening Speaker Series is a free, monthly lecture series open to the public. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Unless otherwise noted, programs will be held at the Missouri State Archives, located at 600 W. Main Street in Jefferson City. The series is underwritten by the Friends of the Missouri State Archives.
