Building a Giant Switch: A LabSpace Hands-On Workshop
Have you ever wondered what actually happens "under the hood" when you flip a light switch? Come join us at the build table for a project that is both "old school" and high-tech!
We’re going big with a classic engineering project: The Giant Lever Switch. Using cardboard, copper tape, and brass, every student will construct a functional mechanical switch that "thunks" into place to light up an LED. It’s a great way to see exactly how electricity travels through a circuit—and it's just plain fun to play with.
Age Groups & Family Building
At LabSpace, we love it when families learn together. Because copper tape and cardboard assembly can be a bit "fiddly," we’ve designed this class with two ways to build:
Junior Engineers (Ages 7-8): This is a Partner Build. We require a hands-on adult helper to stay and work as a team with the student.
Lead Engineers (Ages 9-14): Older students are welcome to build independently, though parents are always encouraged to grab a chair and join in.
