Gerald Parker, a Pickens native and longtime Cherokee County educator will offer tips on tracing your family tree, along with anecdotes of the Parker family as the next speaker in the Pickens Historical Society’s series April 30th at 7 p.m. at Pendley Creek Brewing on Jasper’s Main Street.

Parker will discuss how he took a recent interest into family history from research to a published book, which is available at the Pickens Library reserve room.

                  Parker said his interest in genealogy traces back to two sources. First, his mother who has penned the “Ruth’s Remembrances” column each week in the Progress and “to a great extent that was responsible for my interest genealogy and history.”

                  Second, Parker says his great-grandfather vanished in 1911 and was never found. Parker said he began by digging into this. 

Parker said he comes from a very large, extended family which gave a lot to research. “Both sides of my family are big. I joke that I may be a cousin to every third person in Pickens and Cherokee counties.”

                  Parker said capturing family history has changed greatly over the years. He said now it’s often online research but his father told him he learned it from his grandfather who heard it firsthand, “people would come and stay for three nights and they would talk family lore. I had to dig it up.”

Gerald Parker is a Pickens native, Pickens High School graduate. He taught drama, public speaking, ELA at Sequoyah High School 30 years, before retiring.
