- **Event Description**: Diabetes is serious and common – nearly 1 in 10 Rock County residents lives with the condition.

That’s why Rock County Public Health, the Janesville Lions Club, and Hy-Vee Janesville are teaming up to offer free A1C screenings to the community on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 1–6 p.m. at Hy-Vee Janesville (2500 Humes Road).

This is the second year of this partnership. Last year, 12 percent of people screened learned for the first time that their blood sugar levels were in the prediabetes or diabetes range.

An A1C test is a quick finger-stick blood test that measures average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. During the screening, attendees can review their results right away with a Hy-Vee registered dietitian and talk about what their numbers mean and what steps they can take next.

“Knowing your numbers early gives you the chance to make changes that can protect your health,” said Ellen Rippl, a registered Hy-Vee dietitian who will be offering the screenings at the event. Rippl is also a certified diabetes care and education specialist (CDCES).

A limited number of free walk-in screenings will be available, scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Attendees must be 18 or older to get screened. No fasting is needed before the test.

Additional screenings are available in the Madison area on November 18, 19, and 21.
