Puddingstone Music is delighted to announce a special off-Island musical salon, presented in collaboration with the Jamestown Arts Center, on March 14 at 4:00 pm. The program, titled “Common Threads: Folk, Bach, and Beyond,” features Grammy-winning Canadian cellist Arlen Hlusko in an intimate afternoon of music and dance.
Following her sold-out performances at Rough Point and The Newport Colony House last year, Arlen Hlusko returns to Rhode Island with a solo recital that explores how music can sustain connection, courage, and hope, foregrounding the shared humanity at the heart of listening together. Curated by the artist, “Common Threads: Folk, Bach, and Beyond” weaves beloved folk melodies together with seminal works from the classical and contemporary repertoire.
The program opens with an intimate Improvisation on “Little Birdie” (Traditional, arr. Frankie Carr), moves through the luminous Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 6 and Leyla McCalla’s reflective Meditation No. 1, and continues with traditional favorites such as “Shenandoah” (Traditional, arr. Arlen Hlusko) and “Scarborough Fair” (Traditional, arr. Frankie Carr). These works are placed alongside modern and contemporary voices, including George Crumb’s iconic Sonata for Solo Cello and the fiery first movement of Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata for Solo Cello, Op.8, a landmark piece rooted in Hungarian folk traditions and renowned for expanding the cello’s expressive possibilities.
