FAQ Who is required to audition, and how are auditions scheduled? - All undergraduate applicants and transfer student must audition to enter the Music Unit of the Department of Fine Arts. Audition as scheduled by music faculty by first emailing finearts@mvsu.edu and completing the Audition Form. Students who are admitted without completing an in person or virtual audition will be audition on Thursday before the first day of class each semester. I am already enrolled at MVSU but would like to change my major or add a minor. How do I apply? - Auditioning for the music minor also requires a successful audition. Repertoire requirements are generally identical to the requirements for music majors. Students who wish to apply for a minor in music should contact finearts@mvsu.edu and complete the Audition Form. Music minors must also complete a change of major form and declare music as their minor. How do I apply for a scholarship? - Generally, everyone who auditions as a music major is automatically considered for talent scholarships, as the band and choir director are invited to participate in the audition process. What are the guidelines for recorded auditions? - While all students are encouraged to audition on campus, most studios will accept a recorded video audition in lieu of a live audition. Students who wish to audition on campus but have scheduling conflicts may request an alternate on-campus audition date. Please note the following recorded audition guidelines: - CD/DVD submissions will not be accepted – uploading your recording(s) to YouTube or Vimeo and attach to the Application Form. YouTube videos may be Public or Unlisted, but not Private. - Recordings must include video and should be unedited. Video links are to be submitted on the Audition Form. Review repertoire requirement for your instrument for clarification. - Begin each recording facing the camera an introduce yourself and the piece(s) you are about to present, scales, and other requirements as listed under audition requirements for your instruments. You will not sightread during a virtual audition. - Please ensure that recordings are of the highest possible quality and that all audition requirements are uploaded. We understand that most applicants will not have access to professional recording equipment. Faculty will take this into account in their evaluation. Watch and listen to your recordings before you submit them. - Voice auditions must be accompanied – no a cappella singing, please. Instrumentals should play unaccompanied. - Percussion auditions must be completed on-campus except in extraordinary situations (e.g., international students). Please contact finearts@mvsu.edu if you wish to request a recorded or remote audition. Is an accompanist provided? - An accompanist is provided, free of charge, for all voice auditions on campus.
