Each dinner features a 30-minute presentation followed by a moderated panel discussion. At their core, the dinners are an investment in community-rooted relationship-building that makes justice work possible.The Law is Not Enough: Why People Power MattersJamila Michener will share insights from research rooted in the experiences of ordinary people and based on her recent book, Uncivil Democracy: How Access to Justice Shapes Political Power. Jamila Michener is a professor of Government and Public Policy at Cornell University, and the inaugural director of the Center for Racial Justice and Equitable Futures. She studies poverty, racism, and public policy, with a particular focus on health and housing. She is author of Fragmented Democracy: Medicaid, Federalism, and Unequal Politics (Cambridge University Press) and Uncivil Democracy: How Access to Justice Shapes Political Power (Princeton University Press). She works closely with community-based organizations around the country to apply research insights to address urgent problems facing racially and economically marginalized communities.This dinner will take place from 6–8pm at Southside Community Center (305 S Plain St). Catered dinner will be provided free of charge. Please register in advance and let us know if you have any food allergies we should be aware of.
