Six Mile Creek flows just beyond Ithaca Commons, bringing water and all its potential into Downtown Ithaca. Power of Water: Downtown Six Mile Creek is a new walking tour from The History Center in Tompkins County that follows the creek's final mile from East State Street to Cayuga and Clinton Streets, tracing the sawmills, tanneries, and mills that turned a small settlement into a growing city. Along the way, you'll hear how just one creek shaped industry, infrastructure, and natural disasters in early Ithaca.

Using historic photographs, maps, and firsthand newspaper accounts, guides bring these stories back to life at the very spots where they happened. This tour is an expansion of “The Power of Water: A Dam Good Exhibit,” on display in the Exhibit Hall at 110 N Tioga St through December, 2026. 

Tours are Thursday-Saturday at 5:30 PM, and this tour will run through August 8

What: 75 minute walking tour over sidewalks, gravel paths, and grass - with a slight incline

Where: The History Center in Tompkins County, 110 N Tioga St, Ithaca NY 14850

Who: This tour is designed for ages 16-116

Wear Comfortable Shoes, Bring an Umbrella, Jacket, and Water Bottle

Weather - this tour takes place rain or shine! In case of severe weather, we’ll determine cancellations by 10:30 am the morning-of.
