Hosted by the Center for Racial Justice and Equitable Futures and the Africana Studies & Research Center, the Freedom Party is a space for resource gathering and sharing, storytelling, artmaking, and community building. We’ll have games, food, art, music, activities for all ages, and more. We party for fun and to sustain our fight for freedom!The InspirationIn the summer of 1925, visual artists, musicians, and writers joined civil rights activists, lawyers, physicians, and academics for a party that changed the world. Their gathering stoked the embers of one of the most discussed and robust periods of artistic revival, political upheaval, and scholastic engagement ever witnessed: the Harlem Renaissance.Over 100 years later, we can learn from our early twentieth century counterparts. Parties are places of relaxation and decompression as well as spaces of community galvanization and resource accumulation.
