This course will focus on songs of different styles and regions in Turkey, as well as from neighboring cultures in Azerbaijan, Iran and Kurdistan.
This course is for students who are comfortable singing and performing, with some prior knowledge of this style and repertoire. We will approach Anatolian singing styles systematically, focusing on techniques and exercises to help singers adopt the colors and ornamentations characteristic of these styles. We will put these techniques and vocal nuances into practice, implementing them in important songs from the regional repertoire. As some of these folk styles are not based on the makam system, we will examine certain phrases closely.
We will aim to cover the following songs, as pace allows: “Al Eyvanda Han Kalmadı,” “Hangi Bağın Bağıbanısan” and “İp Attım Ucu Kaldı” (Anatolia), “Dar Hejîrokê,” “Seyran Mangi,” and Arıx (Kurdish), “Ben Melamet Hırkasını (Haydar Haydar)” (Nefes), “Kadifeden Kesesi” (Turkish from Crimea), “Axşam Mahnısı” and “Guba’nın Ağ Alması” (Azeri), “Dosh Dosh” (Farsi), and an Uzun Hava (type of arrhythmic song).
