About Luis -
The Vázquez brothers—Johnny, Francisco, and Luis—are a legendary trio of dancers who created and popularized the L.A.-style of salsa. Originally from Mexico, they moved to Los Angeles, where their energetic, showy, and acrobatic style changed the salsa scene worldwide.
Defining L.A.-style salsa
The Vazquez brothers' version of salsa, danced "on 1," has several distinctive features:
Flashy performance: Unlike traditional styles, L.A.-style incorporates stage elements like tricks, acrobatics, and impressive, high-energy lifts.
Incorporating other dances: The brothers were influenced by dancers like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, as well as by tap dancing, adding complex footwork and fast spins to their style.
Drama and showmanship: Performances often tell a story, with an intense and dramatic flair that sets it apart from earlier styles.
The brothers and their contributions
Each brother played a distinct role in shaping the L.A. salsa scene.
Johnny Vazquez: Known as the "Prince of Salsa," Johnny is famous for his mesmerizing choreography and storytelling through dance. He founded the dance company Imperio Azteca and now runs a dance school in Italy.
Francisco Vazquez: Credited with founding the popular Los Rumberos dance company, Francisco is known for his intense, sharp, and athletic style. He was one of the first to add tricks and acrobatics to salsa.
Luis Vazquez: A multi-talented artist, Luis is an instructor, choreographer, and MC. He co-founded Salsa Brava Productions, one of L.A.'s first salsa dance companies, and now teaches and organizes international dance festivals.
Lasting impact
The Vazquez brothers' legacy extends beyond their dancing and has permanently influenced the broader salsa world.
The L.A. style of salsa-on-1 continues to be one of the most popular and prominent styles danced worldwide.
Flashy acrobatics and theatrical performances, once considered controversial, are now staples of salsa competitions and shows.
The salsa scene in Los Angeles was launched in large part by the brothers and other pioneers, making it a major hub for salsa dancing.
