‘From Iran to Afghanistan; from Palestine to Pakistan: The renewed urgency of anti-imperialist feminisms’

On 8 March 1917, women textile workers in Petrograd, Russia, began a demonstration demanding "Bread, Peace, and Land"-- an end to World War I, to food shortages, and to Tsarism. The mass strike that followed forced the Tsar to resign, won Russian women the right to vote, and paved the way for the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.

Almost 110 years later, the world is mired in intensifying spectres of war, the rise of right-wing authoritarianism and transnational 'anti-gender' attacks, and increasing immiseration of the masses everywhere. From the unprovoked military attack on Iran to the relentless genocide of the Palestinians, US-led imperialism has wreaked havoc across the globe. Much of this imperialist aggression mobilizes 'women's rights' in service of occupation and genocide. Meanwhile, in countries like Pakistan, imperialist wars serve to strengthen the stranglehold of the militarized state apparatus on all aspects of social, economic and political life, with grave consequences for the people across class, gender, and ethnic-regional lines. 

What can, does, or should anti-imperialist feminism look like in the Pakistan context? What can we learn from our Iranian, Palestinian, Afghan, and Baloch sisters about the connections between feminism, national liberation, and anti-imperialism? What can we do, here and now, to strengthen our movement?
