- **Event Name**: Spring Wildflower Walk at Santa Fe Dam Preceded By Habitat Care
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 28 Feb, 2026 at 08:00 am – Sat, 28 Feb, 2026 at 12:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join us for an early morning habitat care session followed by a spring wild flower walk at the Santa Fe Dam Natural Area.About this EventSaturday, February 28: Habitat Care 8 a.m.- 9:30 a.m. Wildflower Walk 9:30 a.m. to noon. The morning will begin with a removal of weedy plants from among the native flora. After admiring our success at this endeavor, we will take a walk focussed on the native wildflower blooms. This will be a slow and easy walk on level trails near the Nature Center exploring the blooms and anything else that catches our collective eyes in this rare, treasured alluvial sage scrub landscape. We will see early fruiting lemonade berry, common phaecelia, blooming deerweed, flowering golden current, showy penstemon, scarlet larkspur, suncups, toad flax, fringed linanthus, and more. Plus, we will be on the look out for cactus wren and their nests and other birds making their home in this habitat. This walk will be led by Gabi McLean, assisted by Cliff McLean and Jennifer Aparicio.Habitat care generally requires using hand tools to remove invasive plants or seeds from a designated area, so those participating can expect to be standing, bending, walking, and carrying bags or tools. If this is not for you, we will find other ways for you to help out. Those participating in the habitat care will receive free entry when mentioning at the park entry kiosk that they are attending the San Gabriel Mountains CNPS chapter volunteer event. If you are interested only in the plant walk you can arrive later, at 9:30 a.m., but will be asked to pay the $12 park entry fee at the entry kiosk.Location: Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area, 15501 E. Arrow Highway, Baldwin Park, CA 91706. Please note that Google maps doesn't always know that the only park entrance is from Arrow Hwy., so it is not a good idea to blindly follow your GPS!Meet: The Nature Center at Santa Fe Dam. From the entrance kiosk on top of the dam, drive down to the first intersection/stop sign and turn right. Continue and turn left at the first intersection, and left again at the next intersection. The road leads right into the Nature Center parking lot.Parking: Nature Center parking lotSpecial conditions: Paths are paved so they are accessible to wheel chairs and strollers.Bring: Everyone should bring water and sun protection. For those participating in the habitat care:For your safety, please wear sturdy closed toed shoes, comfortable clothing covering legs and arms,We will have some snacks; please bring water. We supply work gloves size M and L, but you may bring your own if you prefer. We have some weeding tools, but you may bring your own as well. Be sure they are disinfected with 70% alcohol before use in the area; you can do that upon arrival.A bucket is always handy – we will supply trash bags.Restrooms: Restrooms are availble near the main parking lot of the recreation area, near the park office. Most likely the Nature Center restrooms will be closed.Cancellation: Eventbrite registries will be notified if rain cancels, but that seems highly unlikley. Background info: Please see our chapter Santa Fe Dam conservation pageQuestions: Ask Gabi and Jennifer at sgm.santafedam@cnps.org
