Overlocker skills – Draft Your Own Leggings

If you are looking for an introduction to sewing with stretch fabrics then this class will be perfect for you. We will teach you the basics of pattern cutting, so that you can learn how to draft a pair of leggings to fit you using four basic body measurements. It is perfect for those with an overlocker but haven’t tried making leggings yet, you will use one of our classroom overlockers to construct your garment. Hemming and finishing will be on our sewing machines.

This course will teach you how to make a pair of stretch leggings to fit.

You will learn:

• How to take accurate measurements
• Using the basics of pattern drafting to create a leggings block.

• Cut and handle stretch fabrics to get the best results.

• How to measure your seam allowance

• Overlocker - Pick a suitable stitch length, width and differential feed

• Sewing Machine - Picking a needle, suitable stretch stitch.

• Sewing machine - hemming and top stitching

If you have had an overlocker or sewing machine for a while but were reluctant to start sewing stretch fabrics, then this class will give you the confidence to start making your own clothing at home.

You will need to bring a suitable fabric, see details below.

Please wear something you can easily measure over. such as tights or close fitting leggings.

• Machines
• Scissors
• Pins
• Tape Measures
• Drafting paper
• Tea and Coffee.

• Threads of matching colour to your fabric
• Lunch
• 1.5m of suitable stretch fabric to make your leggings. These are minimum fabric requirements for 57”/145cm wide fabric, please bear in mind that you will need to purchase more for directional prints or if you need to add additional length. Smaller sizes may not use all this meterage. Does not include extra for shrinkage. (Suitable fabrics include cotton lycra, athletic fabrics, lycra, jersey. Non-stretch fabrics will not be suitable for this class, nor will heavier weight stretch fabrics such as French terry/loop back, sweatshirting etc)
