Local leaders Les Davidson, Cecil Fisher, Ken Dalton, Roberta Thompson, Faye Carr, Bill Robertson, and Doreen Thompson recognised the urgent need for culturally safe health care for our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. So from a room in Doreen Thompson’s house, our community received culturally appropriate health care from doctors who travelled from Brisbane, once a week. Today, Kambu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Health employs over 120 people; providing comprehensive medical, specialist, allied, and social health services and a range of early childhood, family and community care programs to the Ipswich and West Moreton regions.
