Our summer concert begins with Brahms' lighthearted mélange of traditional student drinking songs - his Academic Festival Overture - written as a 'thank you' for his honorary doctorate.
We are then privileged to welcome Junyan Chen to perform Rachmaninov's superb Piano Concerto No 3 with us. Silver medalist of the Leeds International Piano Competition 2024, and winner of the Alexandra Dariescu Award for a work by a woman composer, Junyan holds a fellowship with the Royal Academy of Music, having recently graduated with first class BMus and MA degrees as a Bicentenary Scholar.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death, we end with one of his most performed works, his famous Fifth Symphony. The premiere (in Leningrad in 1937) resulted in an hour-long ovation, with the mysterious power of music transcending political oppression to deliver the ultimate unspoken freedom.
