- **Event Name**: Crane Lecture: Sharing the History of Enslaved People on Choate Island
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 21 Feb, 2026 at 01:00 pm – Sat, 21 Feb, 2026 at 02:30 pm
- **Event Description**: Join us for a lecture at the Crane Estate, sharing the history of a family of enslaved individuals on Choate Island. Learn the story of Ned & Sabina, and their 7 children, who were enslaved by the Choate Family and lived on the island in the 1700s. The lecture will include the previously untold story of Ned & Sabina’s two teenage daughters, Jane & Violet, who fell ill and died on the island in the early 1750s, and are buried near the Choate House. Speakers will include Debbie Bygone, a descendent of Ned & Sabina, and Maddie Jay, a local Essex student activist. Debbie & Maddie Jay will share their connection with this story, how they got involved in this important work, and how they are working together, with The Trustees, to share this history and install a historical marker recognizing the gravesite on Choate Island.

This lecture is part of ongoing work at The Trustees to publicly acknowledge the history of enslavement on the island, in collaboration with descendants and community partners, and to honor the lives of Ned & Sabina and their family.

Please arrive between 12:45-1:10 to allow time for parking, arrival and to find a seat. The lecture will start promptly at 1:15pm.
