About the event

Annual Basil Brown Memorial Lecture
Basil Brown Memorial Lecture, 11.00am, Saturday 16th May at The Auditorium, THE HOLD, Fore Street, Ipswich IP4 1LN

Sutton Hoo and Byzantium
Guest speaker: Dr. Helen Gittos, Fellow and Tutor in Medieval History at Oxford University

How did the men and women buried at Sutton Hoo acquire so much wealth?
Why were they buried with so many objects from the eastern Mediterranean?
The conventional view is that they probably acquired the gold from their Merovingian neighbours, and that the imported goods came as gifts or through trade. This lecture will explore some alternative explanations which open up a startlingly new view of Anglo-Saxon history.

Tickets available from Eventbrite; Sutton Hoo Society Members £8 (no fee) and Public £10 (no fee)
