Set in a luxurious and labyrinthian chateau in the Czech resort town of Marienbad, X (Giorgio Albertazzi) insists that he became intimately acquainted with A (Delphine Seyrig) the year before. M (Sacha Pitoeff), who may or may not be A's husband or boyfriend, confronts X, a mysterious suitor, questioning about the truth and motive behind his story.

Mismatched time and place tumble into each other as if gently spun in a kaleidoscope, leading both characters and audience to question the reliability of their own memories. With precisely choreographed performances that accentuate the possibility of disbelief and uncertainty, no one quite knows where their affections have been displaced.
