Hot-headed ship owner Bruce Vail refuses to accept his wife Irene's (Jean Arthur) divorce and hires his driver to forge adultery with Irene in Paris to make the decree null. When the headwaiter of the Chateau Bleu Paul Dumond (Charles Boyer) overhears the commotion, he comes to her rescue and falls for him after a subsequent romantic evening. A brazen mix of melodramatic and romantic comedy, this is director Frank Borzage (The Mortal Storm) at his most unleashed, careening from genre to genre—mirroring the overwhelming whirlwind of explosive romance.
