A planning study for the Burlington Street Bridge – Building Better Connections project, is currently underway, and will ultimately provide improved infrastructure in Downtown Iowa City, near the University of Iowa power plant, between Riverside Drive and south Madison Street. A public meeting will be held, and an online survey is available for the community to provide their thoughts on proposed conceptual alternatives.
The public meeting will feature a presentation at 5:15 p.m. and gather feedback on proposed conceptual alternatives for four key areas of the project, including Burlington Street Bridge, roadway and trail crossings, west campus, and the Burlington Street dam. The study team will be available before and after the presentation to answer any questions. If you are unable to attend in person, you can join the meeting via Zoom at 5:15 p.m. for the presentation. The survey will be open through Friday, Oct. 10.
The Burlington Street Bridge – Building Better Connections project is a planning study and will:
1. Replace the Burlington Street east and westbound bridges with a single bridge.
2. Provide roadway and geometric improvements to Burlington Street, Grand Avenue, Melrose Avenue, and Byington Road, including the conversion of Melrose Avenue and Byington Road to accommodate two-way traffic.
3. Assess ways to improve the bridge and adjacent roadways to better accommodate vehicle, bus, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.
4. Evaluate pedestrian connections and repair or replacement of the pedestrian bridges over Riverside Drive and Grand Avenue.
5. Assess the existing Iowa River dam for potential modifications.
