- **Event Name**: Establishing a Great Glen Wildfire Unit - Drop in event
- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 25 Feb, 2026 at 02:30 pm – Wed, 25 Feb, 2026 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Great Glen communities drop in exploring the establishment of the Great Glen wildfire response unit.

Open from 2:30pm – 5:00pm to anyone at all including owners/managers of forestry, estates, farms, crofts and at risk infrastructure from across the Great Glen and surrounding areas.

No booking required, just call in.

Wildfire risk across the Highlands is increasing. Longer dry periods, land use pressures, policy change and limited SFRS capacity mean that communities, land managers and public agencies are facing a shared challenge.

We would like to present a practical, community-led response so are inviting the public to drop in and learn what it will take to establish the Great Glen unit of Highland Wildfire Response. One of two Pilot units in the Highlands.

This is designed to listen, share, and test whether there is sufficient local appetite and funds to build a coordinated, trained and insured community wildfire capability that complements the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Why Attend?

Wildfires cannot be fought by any single organisation. If a Great Glen unit is to exist, it must be shaped by those of us who live, work and manage land here and in turn supported fully by our communities.

A closed meeting will follow in the evening from 5:30 - 7pm for community leaders, funders and stakeholders. Booking for this can be made here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/establishing-a-great-glen-wildfire-unit-community-stakeholder-event-tickets-1982124078476?aff=oddtdtcreator

Longer dry spells, heavy fuel loads and changing land use mean that a single spark can quickly become a major incident. In a place like the Highlands, with vast landscapes, limited access and long response times, that risk is amplified. When fires break out in remote areas, our neighbours are often the first on scene. Farmers, gamekeepers, forestry workers and land managers regularly step forward to help, often at great personal risk with no insurance or PPE. At the same time, statutory emergency services are stretched across huge geographies and are not designed to provide early intervention or landscape-scale wildfire prevention in rural settings.Highland Wildfire Response exists to close that gap."
