Commanding Culloden: the Jacobite leadership's final test
As part of the 280th Anniversary series, we're hosting historian Dr Arran Johnston for an examination of the Jacobite army's senior commanders as they prepare for, and face, their final and most exposing test. This talk will explore the key personalities and how they fit into the command system, and how their traits and abilities influenced the outcome. With the fate of thousands of men in their hands, how did these senior officers direct the Jacobite army on the battlefield, and why were they unable to secure a final success at Culloden? By challenging some common prejudices and considering the evolving relationships between leaders over the course of the campaign, we gain a better understanding of the influence, importance, and legacies of the leading Jacobite officers on the battlefield.
Dr Arran Johnston is director of the Scottish Battlefields Trust and curator of the Battle of Prestonpans Museum in East Lothian. He is the author of a number of books and articles on the period, including The Battles of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the upcoming Capturing the Capital: Edinburgh in the Last Jacobite Rising which is due for release later this year.
