Poet and author Tim Jones, who recently published his fifth book of poetry Dracula in the Colonies (The Cuba Press, 2025), is returning to Southland – the province he grew up in – to read and discuss his poetry, and the life of a poet, in Invercargill on Tuesday 10 March.

"I lived in Southland from ages 4-16," Tim Jones told Arts Murihiku, "and returned after that to visit family and friends. Along the way, my family lived in Invercargill, Otatara, Mataura and Gore, and I went to some schools that are no longer with us – Surrey Park School and Lithgow Intermediate – and others that are very much still on the scene – Otatara School, Mataura School and the former Gore High School, now Māruawai College."

"I often travelled with my Dad for his work, which took him from the Catlins to Te Waewae Bay, from Puysegur Point to Milford Sound, and over to Rakiura. So Southland sank deep into my bones, and though it's many years since I moved north, Southland has left a deep impression on my poetry – including "Restraints", my poem about my Mum and her life in Invercargill that was selected for inclusion in Ōrongohau | Best New Zealand Poems 2022."

"From 5-7pm on Tuesday 10 March at Whare Taupua, 34 Forth St, I'll be reading poems about and inspired by Southland, then there'll be a chance to have a conversation about being a poet and about poetry in Murihiku. I'll also have books for sale and signing. I hope to see you there."

Tim's books will be available for sale and signing at the event, and there will be time for a chat over a cuppa afterwards.
