About the event

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women Vigil
On Saturday, December 6th, at 11:00am, End Violence Alliance Renfrew County invites community members, local government representatives, and allied service providers to gather in sombre recognition of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This annual Vigil, which takes place at the Women’s Monument in Petawawa, honours:
the 14 young women murdered at Polytechnique Montréal on December 6th, 1989
missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit kin
women from Renfrew County killed as a result of gender-based violence
as well as women, children, trans women, and gender non-conforming individuals killed within the province of Ontario during the past year.

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is about remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who we have lost to it. It is also a time to take action. Achieving a Canada free from gender-based violence requires everyone living in this country to educate themselves and their families and communities on gender-based violence, centre the voices of survivors in our actions and speak up against harmful behaviours. Please join us in lighting candles, laying roses, and sharing songs in remembrance and honour of all who experience gender-based violence.

The Women’s Monument is accessible from 2 Harry St. and 3 Algonquin St. in Petawawa. Street parking is available on-site. This is an outdoor event, so please dress appropriately for the cold weather conditions. In an effort to make this event accessible, there will be use of a sound system, as well as video and audio recording throughout the Vigil.

End Violence Alliance Renfrew County respectfully invites family members and close friends of those named on the Women’s Monument to identify themselves in advance of the Vigil, if they wish to lay a rose in honour of their loved one’s memory.
